WAEC Candidate Fatally Shot by Police During Chase in Ibadan

A tragic incident unfolded in Ibadan on Tuesday morning when a secondary school student was fatally struck by a stray bullet allegedly fired by police officers pursuing suspected internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo boys.”

The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was en route to his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examination center, accompanied by his father. The incident occurred along Gbagi Market Road, near Akala Express, where police officers were reportedly chasing a vehicle suspected of being involved in fraudulent activities.

Eyewitnesses reported that during the high-speed pursuit, officers opened fire, aiming at the tires of the fleeing vehicle. Tragically, one of the bullets missed its target and struck the student inside his father’s car. The victim was immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The news of the student’s death sparked outrage among residents and traders, who subsequently took his body to the Oyo State Secretariat to demand justice and accountability from the authorities. As of the time of this report, the Oyo State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Efforts to reach the police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, for comments have been unsuccessful.

The incident has reignited concerns over police conduct and the use of firearms in populated areas. Many citizens have taken to social media to express their grief and call for comprehensive reforms within the Nigerian Police Force to prevent such tragedies in the future.
