The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended the service year of Ms. Rita Ushie, popularly known on Instagram as Raye, by two months. This follows a viral post where she criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government for the worsening economic hardship in Nigeria.
Raye, a well-known social media influencer and NYSC corps member as at last week, shared a passionate Instagram post highlighting Nigeria’s economic struggles. In it, she called out the government for failing to address rising inflation, unemployment, and fuel prices.
Her message quickly went viral as many Nigerians praised her courage, while others feared she might face consequences. Days later, reports confirmed that the NYSC had extended her service year.
In an official statement, the NYSC mentioned that Raye’s extension was due to “non-compliance with service regulations.” Although they did not mention her Instagram post directly, sources inside the agency said her public criticism of the government was a major factor in the decision.
According to the NYSC,
“Corps members are expected to conduct themselves with discipline and follow the rules of service. The extension is in line with NYSC guidelines.”
Many Nigerians do not buy into the official reason, as supporters of Raye believe the extension is a clear punishment for speaking out.
“This is about silencing her,” said one of her close friends.
“She told the truth about what Nigerians are going through.”
Others, however, believe corps members should avoid political commentary during their service year.
“While her concerns are valid, there are rules in place for a reason.” said Dr. John Oluwaseun, a political analyst.
This incident has sparked a wider debate about freedom of speech and the role of young people in politics. Many young Nigerians see social media as their only platform to be heard. Influencers like Raye have become key voices in the fight for change.
Student activist Amina Ibrahim shared her support:
“Raye speaks for all of us. This punishment won’t stop the movement. If anything, it will inspire more people to speak up.”
