Nigeria Set to Miss Relay Races in Tokyo After AFN Fails to Register Athletes

Nigeria will not be featuring in any relay event in Tokyo, after the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) failed to register qualified athletes for the necessary qualifying meets.

The development has sparked outrage among athletes and fans, who accuse the AFN of negligence and mismanagement.Reports indicate that at least 11 athletes who met the standards were left out, while officials allegedly took their places on travel lists.

Critics say the federation prioritized “estacode” trips for administrators instead of ensuring athletes competed. This failure means Nigeria will not contest the men’s or women’s 4x100m and 4x400m relays events where the country has historically been competitive.

Stakeholders are demanding accountability, warning that such lapses damage the reputation of Nigerian athletics. The AFN has yet to provide a full explanation, but pressure is mounting for reforms to ensure qualified athletes are never sidelined again.
