Prof. Chris Piwuna Elected as New ASUU President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) elected Professor Chris Piwuna its new national president during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, which was held on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State.


Prof. Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, Succeeds Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

The election saw Prof. Piwuna defeating Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, to become the 14th President of ASUU.


His Emergence comes at a critical time for Nigerian Universities, with ongoing Discussions surrounding funding, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), mass labour migration from universities (brain drain), issues of autonomy, and improved welfare for academic staff.


Prof. Piwuna’s leadership is anticipated to guide the Union’s engagements with the government and other stakeholders in addressing the pertinent challenges.
An official communiqué is expected from ASUU at the end of its congress on Monday.
